JOEL BEEKE IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR CHRISTOLOGY (IS 414) BY FELIPE BOECHAT ASSERUY SILVA GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN AUGUST 2016    The Biblical Witness to the Divinity of Christ Introduction It is central for Christian thought that Jesus is himself God. Since the first centuries of the Christian Church the faithful have fought bravely to keep this orthodox teaching. Athanasius wrote repeatedly in favor of the divinity of Christ and of the divinity of the Holy Spirt; such devotion caused him to suffer intense persecution at times given his defense of the doctrine of the Trinity . Athanasius praise worthy orthodox stance for the Christian faith caused the expression “  Athanasius contra mundum ” (Athanasius Against the World) to be remembered until the present day. Even with all the Trinitarian formulations made in the first five centuries of the church attacks upon this doctrine are found until today. During the Reformation and Post-Reformation  period it was not any different. During the mid-seventeenth century an official defense of the doctrine of the Trinity “fell to Francis Cheynell. A member of the Westminster Assembly, Cheynell was particularly gifted (and fierce) in polemical debate, as his opponents found out. His works, The Rise, Growth and Danger of Socinianism (London, 1643) and The Divine Triunity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (London, 1650) are his best-known attacks on Socinianism.” #  The orthodox doctrine of the Trinity has been truly attacked by many sects and heresies or, as Turretin $  puts it, “most pestilent heretics (who with execrable impiety oppose it [divinity of  %& &'( &)*( +, %&'-.-/)0/1 &'( 2+3&4).( +, &'( 54).)&6 7-/ .+& ,+4*08-&(2 7)&' &'( 94(3)/( 2(,).)&)+./ +, &'( # /&  :(.&046; &')/ /'+082 <( 0.2(4/&++2 -/ -. L(4)&-M( H++I/1 #N #B1 OP= $  J4(-& 9+4&)+./ +, &'( 7+4I +, 5044(&). 7-/ 2)4(3&(2 -M-)./& &'( Q+3).)-./= C+4 *+4( /(( C4-.3)/ 5044(&).1 6)7'&'$',7 -4 8.,)3'&3 *+,-.-/0  1 (2 <6= F-*(/ 5= @(..)/+.1 &4-./ <6= J(+4M( R0/M4-E( J)M(4 ?S')88)9/<04M1 >=FK STG S0<8)/').M1 UU#B=   # Christ” D  some of them are: Nestorianism, Arianism, Ebionism, Macedonianism, Gnosticism, Docetism, Judaism, Islamism, Mormonism, Jehovah's Witnesses, Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Confucianism, etc. According to Turretin the divinity of Christ can be invincibly proved through four elements ascribed to Christ (that actually belong to God alone): “(1) the names of God; (2) the attributes of God; (3) the works of God; (4) the worship due to God.” A  This paper intends to display all of these four elements and more, since there are additional paths to proving Christ’s divinity. This paper will provide several testimonies coming from the Old and New Testaments; will show the harmony in the combination of both Old and New Testaments witnesses of Christ’s divinity; and lastly, show a few passages that instead of positively asserting the deity of Christ are simply, as John Frame said, “Taking Jesus’ Deity for Granted” P . At the conclusion an evangelistic use of the information seen in this paper will be provided. The Biblical Testimony of the Old Testament The  protevangelium V  is considered to be the first reference to the divinity of the promised Messiah. The one who was going to destroy the works of the serpent (the devil), by the crushing of its head, had to be a divine entity, otherwise how would a mere man prevail against Satan? R= C4-*(1 907',:('&3 *+,-.-/01 () 6)'%-;$3'&-) '- <+%&7'&() =,.&,4   ?S')88)9/<04M1 >(7 F(4/(6K STG S0<8)/').M1 #N $B1 DDV= V  5')/ (X94(//)+. 4(,(4/ &+ &'( (E-.M(8)3-8 94+*)/( *-2( &+ YE( 4)M'& -,&(4 &'( ,-881 4(M)/&(4(2 ). $K A=   $ humanity is distinctly asserted, and the nature of the triumph which he was to effect, in the subjugation of Satan, proves that he was to be a divine person.” O  The well-known messianic passage found in Isaiah 9:6 is another great testimony of the Son’s divinity: “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.” This passage alone applies to the coming Messiah not only less used titles of God, but explicitly calls the Messiah as God and everlasting Father. How could anything but the Messiah’s divinity be understood from this passage? In Jeremiah 23:6 the Messiah is explicitly receiving the same title as God, “In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, The Lord Our Righteousness.” The explicit use of the most holy name ( ! !# ) is applied to the coming Messiah; in the whole of Scripture this name is never used for anything else than divinity. How could it be applied to anything different? Old Testament in Harmony with The New Testament The Old Testament also presents several assertions related to divinity that would certainly  be taken as references to God, the Father. However, when the New Testament makes direct references to these passages, or when they simply allude them, the interpretation of the New Testament itself is that those passages actually refer to Jesus.
