  GLORIA FUERTES Gloria Fuertes was born in the popular Madrid district of Lavapies. Her mother was a seamstress and maid; her father, a  beadle. She attended the Institute of Vocational ducation of !omen. Her interest in writin started at the earl# a e of five, when she wrote and drew her ownstories. She be an writin poetr# at fourteen, at fifteen read them in $adio Spain of Madrid, and at seventeen shaped her first boo% of poems,  Isla Ignorada , published in &'(). *pon the death of her mother in &'+, she went to wor% for seventeen #ears in Metallur # !or%shops, and the followin #ear she published her first poems and ave her first poetr# readin on $adio Madrid.she alwa#s was defined as -selftau ht and poeticall# deschoolin /. In &'6& she won the Fulbri ht scholarship in the *nited States to teach Spanish literature at the *niversit# of 7uc%nell; then she tau ht at Mar# 7aldwin 1olle e and 7r#n Mawr 1olle e and tau ht Spanish to 3mericans at the International Institute until &'6+; then she received Scholarship in &'89 from the :uan March Foundation for 1hildren5s Literature.In her mid8)s she became activel# involved in various children5s pro rams 0V, Siendo *n Globo, os Globos, 0res Globos # La 1ometa 7lanca, which definitivel#  became the poetr# of childrenIndefati able heav# smo%er, she died of lun cancer on <ovember 98, &''= and was  buried in the South 1emeter# Madrid.
