My Cultures and Microcultures By: Shalyn Helman  Family Structure ã I was born to two young parents of the ages of 16 and ! Both of my parents were drug addicts my dad got clean when I was and my mom not until I was 1 ! ã My biological parents ne#er actually dated or married each other$ but both ended up marring my father to my step mother when I was 11 and my mom to my step father when I was 1 ! ã %ue to the fact that both my parents were drug addicts I mo#ed around a lot and in sense was tossed from one family member to the ne&t! ã Both of my parents had plenty of children after me lea#ing me with ' brothers and ( sisters none of which are completely biologically related to me$ either ha#ing a di)erent biological mother or father! ã %uring high school I meet my husband and we married at 1* now li#ing alone with no children close to both his parents and my sets of parents!  +eligion ã From birth till about the time I was 11 years old$ there was no tal, of religion in the many homes I li#ed in! ã  -his was until my father married my step.mother who was a Christian and I mo#ed in when I was 11! ã /e as a family attended church wee,ly if not more and I in a sense found god and was bapti0ed to a nondenominational church! ã nce my Biological mother became clean from drugs she also turned to god$ but because of the struggles I faced I turned away! ã /hile li#ing with either set of family I faced huge arguments about my beliefs and where e&actly I would spend my eternity$ and o#erall what ,ind of person being atheist made me! ã 2t this time in my life I do not belie#e myself to be part of a religious group nor to I attend church$ but I belie#e in many of the Christian bibles teachings and in many scienti3c theories!  Se&ual rientation ã I reali0ed that I 4wasn5t normal in 3fth grade elementary school when my best friend ,issed me$ and I li,ed it! 2t that time I didn5t ,now what it meant$ not until I wad 1( and 3nally reali0ed I was bise&ual and came out to my mom$ grandma and step.father! ã My mother and grandma were #ery accepting of me while my step.father told me it was 47ust a phase and that I didn5t actually ,now! ã /hen I again mo#ed in with my Biological father and his wife them being de#oted Christians belie#ed my bise&uality a sin! ã %uring the time I li#ed with them I was not aloud to tal, about my se&uality or ha#e a girlfriend or e#en mention the 89B- community! ã Many days my step.mother would tell me I was going to hell$ or that I needed to change! ã ;ow that I am married to a man both my biological father and step.mother ne#er mention the earlier times! ã <#en though I am married to a man I don5t thin, of myself as straight and ne#er will$ being bise&ual has changed my life! It has brought new friends into my life ad ,ic,ed bac, ones out$ being bise&ual made me understand that family is not always something to count on$ and o#erall 7ust shaped my life!
